I get asked a lot about milestone sessions and whether I offer them. It’s always been such a hard question for me because if I’m being honest, my answer is no. Milestone sessions for me always come across as something with backdrops, props, themes where your baby is expected to sit, smile, and pose on cue. As cute as those are, it’s just not me or the kind of experience I want to give my families. They seem stressful, forced and not a reflection of the authentic moments I love to capture in every session. However this session here is exactly the kind of milestone session I love to offer. No props, nothing forced, no babies being expected to sit and pose. Just real life and real moments. It’s a little different than the type of milestone session people typically envision but this is exactly where my heart is with my families and what you can expect during a milestone session with me.
I met this sweet family through my chiropractor’s office and struck up a friendship there. I was so thrilled when they hired me last year to do maternity and newborn pictures for their twin boys and loved being able to document that time in their family’s journey. The twins came really early and spent a significant time in the NICU so a year later, they still hold the record for my oldest newborn babies as they were about 12 weeks old when they finally came home and were able to get to my studio. Even at 12 weeks old, they were so sweet and easy to work with you would have thought they were just a few days old.
As their 1st birthday was coming up, I was so excited to see them again for a snuggle session at my studio. They chose to upgrade to a full hour session instead of the standard 30 minutes which gave us a lot of time together. We spent at least half of that time as a family session. We played, we tickled, we danced, we LAUGHED. It was honestly a lot of fun. As I always do when I know the session is being used as a milestone session, I took close ups of each twin boy when moments naturally presented themselves throughout the session. At the very end, we spent about 10 minutes getting pictures of them alone and then finished with a cake smash. Everything was simple, no props, nothing forced or staged. We just let the moments unfold naturally. To say I love this session would be a huge understatement!
I have so many favorite moments from this session, it would be hard to even begin to narrow them down. However I love the feeling that comes through across the whole session. Big brother just loving on his two brothers, Mom and Dad snuggling and playing with their kids, and of course this cake smash was one for the books. One boy absolutely loved it as you will see and literally dug his face into the cake repeatedly while the other sobbed, which is just so adorable. I have to admit, I’m a sucker for a pouty face! And didn’t Mom knock it out of the park with wardrobe? I am loving how this color scheme compliments the studio.
